Town crier revives civic traditions

Nantwich Town Council town crier is familiar face and professional town crier, Devlin Hobson, who is reviving civic traditions  to promote the town.

   Devlin is experienced in the field having had previous appointments in Kidsgrove and Middlewich - even previously filling in occasionally in Nantwich.

  The town crier will greet shoppers and proclaim events, as well as promoting businesses wishing to announce special offers.

 

   Devlin commented: “I was proud and honoured to be appointed as Nantwich’s official town crier. 

   "I’m here for everyone in the town and I am keen to promote the town as much as possible."

Mondays

5.15pm to 6.15pm: TAFPA dance classes.

Tuesdays

12 noon - 2pm: Nantwich Luncheon Club. For residents

   aged 60-plus living within the town boundary. Book a

2pm to 4pm: Table tennis

7.15pm to 11pm: Ceroc (Jive and Salsa Dance).

Wednesdays

9.30am to 12 noon: 50+ Club.

2pm to 4.30pm: Tea dance.

Month by month

 

Vintage Escapades Artisan Market, selling arts and crafts, with food and drink are held on Saturdays.

V & A Fairs, Antique, Vintage and Collectors' Fairs, with 65 stands, are open from 10am to 3.30pm. In the Civic Hall or on The Square.

Farmers' Markets are held on The Square on the last Saturday of the month, from 9am to 3pm, except in December when it will be staged a week earlier. Markets start on February 24. No market in March.

 


Mayor's Quiz for Charities

A QUIZ NIGHT will be staged in The Civic Hall, helping the raising of funds for the Mayor of Nantwich's charities on Friday, February 9.

   Teams of six are invited to take part in the event hosted by Chris Radford. The cost is £15 per person, with a hot pork bap included. Entrants are asked to advise of any dietary requirements.

   Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

   The charities supported by the Mayor during her year in office are: Nantwich First Responders, Nantwich Food Bank, Mid Cheshire Hospitals charity and Cheshire Dogs Home.

Nantwich Film Club

THE town's community cinema is volunteer run and shows films on a 5.7metre (224-inch) screen.

   They present a wide variety of genres, including popular,  independent, classic and foreign language films.

   The club would like opinions and suggestions for films and events. The committee welcomes new members.

   Films are screened on the second Monday of the month. The doors open at 7pm and films start promptly at 7.45pm (unless stated otherwise - for a longer film, for instance). The bar opens at 7pm.

   There is no membership fee and no obligation to see every film. Tickets are £5 on the door - no booking - and open to all, subject to British Board of Film Classification certification.

February 12: "Tori and Lokita". Running time: 88 minutes. Genre: drama. Languages: Italian and French. "Full of heart and humanity." The realistic story of a pair of very young people from Africa struggling to survive with any semblance of dignity in Europe. They become the victims of a system that seeks to ruthlessly exploit the powerless for its own gain.  

 

March 11: "The Worst Person in the World". A "coming of age film for grown-ups who still feel they haven't grown up." Julie is a young woman struggling to navigate adult life, never quite seeing things through in her

ever-changing professional and love life. The troubled lead is played by Cannes Best Actress, Renate Reinsve.

  To hire the Civic Hall, telephone 01270 628633. The main hall has a 500-person capacity. The Peggy Killick Suite holds 80 people for parties, conferences, meetings, exercise classes, dance groups, training days, etc.

   Brookfield Hall can also be hired.

 

  The Civic Hall is owned and run by Nantwich Town Council who acquired it from Cheshire East Borough Council. (See this Letter from Nantwich).

The Very Best in Stand-Up Comedy

STAND UP COMEDY shows are held on the first Friday of the month in the Civic Hall. The shows, which feature four comedians, are open to 18-year-olds and over.

   Tickets, at £12, are available from the Civic Hall, at the box office or by calling 01270 628633 during office hours. The Civic Hall doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start.

   The Very Best in Stand Up Comedy is presented by Straight Up Comedy with Nantwich Town Council.

 

February 2: On compere duties for the evening is talented and renowned Matt Reed, a seasoned comedian known for his sharp observational humour and quick wit. He has no less than 15 residencies as MC across his native North East and beyond, with an experience dating back over 20 years.

​   Making his debut at Nantwich is Tez Ilyas, among the household names in the UK. He is celebrated for his clever social commentary combined with a relaxed and likeable stage presence.

​   Variety is the spice of life for the middle act, Jack Gleadow, a razor-sharp fireball of energy that's silly, slapstick and who stages a feel-good 25 minutes. He has had gigs in countries all over Europe and the UK.   ​

   Completing the lineup is the incomparable Alistair Barrie - also making his debut. A comedian known for his intelligent humour and thought-provoking insights.
