THE downstairs room on the Church Lane side
of the Parish Hall (some call it the Parish Rooms or Church House) by St Mary's has returned
to church use. While always hired out to local organisations, the room -
like the upper one - was always a church room to me.
Now the church office (tel
01270 625268) has moved into the rooms (a single one was divided up in
recent years) vacated by Nantwich Tourist Information Centre when it
joined other Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council offices at the Civic
Hall in Market Street in October 2006.
This, to me, is by far the best
location for the church office. It used to be housed on the ground floor
of premises in Hospital Street - near to, but not actually on, church land
- and then it moved to a wooden hut in the mason's yard in The Gullet,
adjacent to the church on the east side. Nearer, but not quite right.
The church office is now facing
St Mary's and can be found easily by anyone who wants to discuss church
matters such as baptisms and weddings. It is in the best location in
town for anyone who deals with the public.
I could never understand why
the TIC left it - apart from cost-saving reasons, I suppose, and locating their personnel in premises already owned by the
borough. |
