Support is around, but now for the funding

  April 2009

A GREENSPACES SOUTH CHESHIRE CIC PAGE

HERE'S a plea to the people of Nantwich from Jeff Stubbs, Chair, Greenspaces South Cheshire CIC

AFTER the recent Press coverage about the ongoing development of our new not-for-profit Community Interest Company called Greenspaces South Cheshire, we would like to express our sincere thanks to all the many residents and groups in our area who have got in touch to offer their overwhelming support.

We want to continue the brilliant work of the Nantwich Riverside Project and go further - rolling it out across South Cheshire.

We have had lots of individuals offer their help, but local parish councils, Riverside Concern and Nantwich Anglers (some 500 members strong), have approached us in particular. They all want to work alongside us.

But funding is still a major issue. We can’t deliver on these ambitious and exciting plans without core funding the get the thing rolling.

We had a vital meeting with top brass at East

Cheshire Council - Cllr Andrew Knowles (the Cabinet Member at Cheshire East), together with Cllr Rodney Walker, Chairman of the Nantwich Local Area Partnership, senior officers and all our local Nantwich councillors.

They all supported the principle of our new community partnership and agreed how much it coincided with their council-wide priorities and community strategies. After all, the project will deliver real value for money for the council taxpayer.

At the beginning of April, we are still waiting anxiously to hear their decision.

Undeterred, we are continuing to look elsewhere to see if there are any other sources of partnership working and project funders.

We were also interested to read in the local Press that the Nantwich First group on Nantwich Town Council is talking of how they might spend the considerable sum that they acquired after the sale of the allotments site some years ago.

What better way to spend money raised from the sale of our green field than in revitalising our remaining Greenspaces?

"Talk of the Town" (the newsletter of Nantwich Town

Council) also recently asked for ideas on how to spend the Town Council’s bounty. We urge readers to let them know if their current suggestions are what you really want for the town.

Greenspaces South Cheshire thinks there are other projects - such as ours - that can bring long-lasting improvements to facilities for everyone. We just need some support from our town council - not just with funds, but with their ideas for local environmental projects that we can help them to create, especially those involving, you, the Nantwich community.

Thanks again to everyone who has supported us by letting local councillors know how much Greenspaces has the support of the local people.

Please keep on spreading the word that South Cheshire desperately needs action to protect and improve its green spaces for local people and for wildlife.

Nantwich, Crewe and the surrounding villages could be a beacon for future sustainable living. We have the natural potential, we have an enlightened and engaged community – what we need now is the political and financial backing for real environmental action that will create a future of which our children will be proud.
