Railway company marks station work

June 2012

AS a constituent member of the group that looks after Nantwich Railway Station, Nantwich in Bloom play their part in the upkeep of the flower beds and hanging baskets. And so it was fitting that the Chairman of Nantwich in Bloom (Doug Butterill) and the Secretary (Sue Hughes) should collect a special award at the 2012 Station Adoption Conference in Shrewsbury on May 22.

It marks the work the group puts in to keep Nantwich, an unstaffed station, in honours such as the Best Kept Station Award.

The Arriva presentation was held in the Prince Rupert Hotel where Doug and Sue received a clear glass award bearing the simple inscription: "2012 Station Adoption Conference, Shrewsbury.  For outstanding personal contribution. Nantwich Station Adoption Group."

Geraint Morgan, Community Affairs Manager for Arriva Trains Wales, has made several visits to Nantwich Station as the group receive awards in the Best Kept Station competition.

He said: "Each year, we like to recognise individuals or groups who have made a big contribution towards the Adopt-a-Station scheme.  In its eighth year, we have more than 150 partnerships in the scheme.

"Doug Butterill and his team at Nantwich were recognised in this year’s conference for their continuing commitment in maintaining the floral displays at Nantwich railway station. They have been long-standing supporters of the scheme and have won many awards in the Cheshire Best Kept Station initiative.

"The team are everything that we look for in adopters and their hard work is reflected in the appearance of the station."

The 100th station has just been adopted by a local group in North Wales, out of a total of 190 unstaffed stations. The adopting scheme started in 2004.
