A Letter from Nantwich

Seats of learning

TAKE a rest on the benches around the war memorial on The Square and you can educate yourself about some of Nantwich's history at the same time.

A set of 16 new seats, provided recently as part of a Nantwich Now-backed improvement, have one of four dates on the legs relating to events through the ages. Of course, the same date appear on more than one of the seats. (I wonder how long it will take people to realise that!)

Before I tell you what happened on the dates in question, see if you can fill in the answers.  Please don't write them on your computer screen . . . ! I'll give you the first one - not out of kindness but because you would never get it in a month of Sundays.

To check your answers, see the foot of this page. Visitors to town can find the answers on little plaques in the centres of the back of the seats.

Other improvements in The Square in recent months were: new litter bins, upgraded notice boards and an improvement to the electricity supply route for the Christmas tree lights. The same, with new seats, happened on Mill Island - together with a new path along the river (almost copying the route of the old walk in the days when we had a corn mill).

Snow Hill received improved footways, together with new lamp posts, bins and signs.

The answers: 1086, an entry relating to Nantwich appeared in Domesday Book. 1583, The Great Fire of Nantwich. 1644, The Battle of Nantwich. 1849, a cholera epidemic hit the town. How did you do?
