OLD NANTWICH PICTURES (16)

The class of 1913-14

THESE lads - some in the uniform of Boy Scouts (that's how they were designated in time of the photograph!) - were pictured at Market Street Church of England primary school in 1913-14. On the left of the picture is the headmaster, Mr Henry Colin Barker.

Nantwich historian, Andrew Lamberton, was given the picture by the late Robin Gray - with whom Andrew produced books about the town's lost buildings.

The line up of boys includes Robin's father, Hector Gray, Len Boyer (see the Acton A.O.S. pictures) and Harry Clewlow (father of Harry Clewlow of the butcher's shop).

The pupils are: back row, Harry Williamson, Arthur Myford, William Butler, William Western, Harry Slack and George Pye.

Second row, Harry Bleasedale, Jack Frost, Cyril Cornes, Albert Glover, Harry Case and Jack Chesworth.

Third row, Sam Ridgeway, Harry Clewlow, Jack Green, William France, Frank Racklyeft, Hector Gray and Reg Bailey.

Front row: Joseph Jervis, Leonard Boyer and Herbert Bowker.

Some Square buildings

THE Square in the 1930s is interesting, writes Andrew Lamberton.

There is W.H.Smiths at the far end of the block of shops, with Bowens, the centre shop, which has an advertising sign for Pullars of Perth.

Next is what was then called the Queen Bess Cafe. Today that is known as The Queen's Aid House, which marks a generous gift to the town by Queen Elizabeth I after the Great Fire of Nantwich.

At the extreme right of the picture is what looks like the metal rod used to pull the blinds down over the window.

Loading coal from

a goods train

THIS is Nantwich Railway Station Coal Wharf, pictured in 1964. The lorry of one of the local coal merchants is being loaded - some in reusable sacks and other, larger, pieces piled loosely in the centre of the lorry. As well as the man on the left, note the man in the coal truck of the train (and his shovel) loading the lorry.
