Tales from the Riverside

October 2008 (updated)

James Thompson, former Nantwich Riverside Project Manager for two borough councils, and now Executive Director of Greenspaces South Cheshire CIC, is a familiar face around the banks of the River Weaver. Here, he tells about the latest events down on the Riverside.

Update February 2010: Funding for The Nantwich Riverside Project dried up (no pun intended) in January 2010. But a new organisation was set up hoping to fill the gap, with James staying on as its Nantwich Riverside Project Manager. See this Letter from Nantwich.

Exciting project for mill site

Work is carried out on stabilising and tidying the foundations of the old corn mill. The workman in front of the semi-circular boarded-up opening gives an idea of the size of the structure. To the left, behind the flowers, the mill race has been given a facelift (see below).

HERE'S a quick update from the Riverside Project.

Nantwich Lake Area

FOLLOWING on from new seating provided by Nantwich Town Council and a grant from the Rights of Way team earlier this year, work is currently under way on a circular path round the lake to tie everything together. The area, which can be very wet in the winter months, will benefit greatly from this improved access for users of all abilities.

Masterplan

IT sounds quite frightening but we are shortly to be consulting with all and sundry on the plan for the Riverside area in the future. This plan/plans will outline all the ideas and potential for this wonderful area of ours.

Local radio at event

AS we have done in the past, we are holding an event on Sunday, October 12, 12noon to 4pm, at the Shrewbridge Road car park area. BBC Radio Stoke will be there with their gardening programme and nostalgia hour, so it’s an opportunity to make your voice heard on the airwaves.  We will be running activities on the day, including planting out, preparing wildflower meadow areas and willow weaving. So come and join us.

lSee a report of the event here.

Nantwich Mill and the Mill Island area

FOLLOWING the installation of the new bridge earlier this year, works are now under way on tidying up the Mill Bridge area - the main entrance to the island. These involve remedial works and the upgrading of the bridge area to make it safe and fit for purpose.  We also hope it will look quite nice once finished.

Later, we hope to do something much more exciting with this site to provide for the future. Watch this space.

Willow coppice growing well

IN the April 2008 report from the Chairman of Nantwich in Bloom (Honarary Alderman Doug Butterill), there are pictures of the newly-planted willow coppice - complete with arch - in an area of the Riverside.

Here, the coppice is pictured in October 2008.
